Agapanthus

Species

"Cultivated Agapanthus species are a horticultural taxonomist's nightmare" states one of the books, I've read. I've to admit, it's true. Besides the classic cultivars you'll find many new cultivars and hybrids, often crossed between the classic groups. So the classification in the literature often differs not just in the small detail. As Agapanthus nowadays is grown not only in South Africa, but also in New Zealand and Europe, you might find oviously same hybrids having two or more names.

In our table we try to list not only the classic species but also the newer and recent cultivars and hybrids. I'm afraid, this list will never achieve to be fully complete and correct, but we try to give an overview mentioning the classic cultivars and the most common new cultivars being known in Europa. Please help us, to complete the list with names and, as with many cultivars we miss an accurate description of color, size, and form of tubes, with discriptions. Specially for the European mainland, we need more destinct information about real hardy cultivars. So feel free to share your expierence. Just drop us an Email: info@agapanthus.info

The following table is split into decidious and evergreen Agapanthus, splitted again by color of foilage. In the future we want to add form and size of foilage, the size of the tubes and where needed basic information about special care and hardiness.

(We know, mixing up the classic and newer cultivars is scientifically not correct, as the recent are descendants of the older ones. Our main attitude is helping the advanced gardener growing Agapanthus, we don't want to take part in any scientifical dispution as the classification differs from publication to publication. )
